Spring is finally here!

Winter can often feel like it will never end, and if you’ve been impatiently waiting for winter to finally wind down, you’ll be glad to know that the first official day of spring is here at last. With every new season, comes new challenges for your plumbing system, and there are a few steps you’ll need to take in order to help your plumbing successfully make the transition from winter to spring. Here are a few plumbing tips for spring from our Belleville plumber:

#1. Inspect your plumbing system.

The cold, harsh temperatures in the winter can wreak havoc on your plumbing, and when winter finally ends, it’s important to take stock of the shape that your system is in. Now that spring is here, you should inspect every part of your plumbing system in your home, including the valves, outside spigots, faucets, pipes, etc. If you find any issues, call in a professional plumber to get the repairs you need.

#2. Clean out plumbing vents on your roof.

Over the course of the winter, twigs, dirt, leaves and other debris can build up in the plumbing vents on your roof. These should be checked and cleaned out periodically throughout the year. If you don’t have a ladder, or you’re just not comfortable getting on top of your roof, don’t hesitate to call in a pro.

#3. Test out your sump pump.

Just as debris can build up in the plumbing vents on your roof, it can also collect inside the discharge lines of your sump pump. This debris should be discharged before you test out your sump pump. When your sump pump is ready to be tested, pour water in the pit and turn on the switch. Ensuring that your sump pump is in working order is essential for preventing water damage in your home during the rainy spring. If your sump pump does not kick on when you test it, get a professional to take a look.

#4. Clean your drains.

A clean drain is much less likely to clog than a dirty drain, and drain cleaning is a simple maintenance task that can prevent pricey clogs down the road. Don’t try to clean your drains with liquid drain cleaner, as it has been known to eat away at your pipes. Instead, get your drains cleaned safely and properly by hiring a plumber.

#5. Fix any plumbing leaks.

Plumbing leaks are easy to ignore, and you may be totally unaware that some of them even exist, but it’s important to get the leak repair you need. Spring is often when we turn on our sprinkler systems and start watering our gardens and plants. Save as much as you can on your water but getting any leaks in your faucets, pipes or toilets repaired.
