It is not secret that a leaky toilet could be costing you a lot of money on every utility bill, but it can be difficult to tell if you have a leak. A toilet leak is easier to spot if you know what to look for. Sometimes there could be a leak with little to no indicators, but luckily our Fairview Heights plumber is here to help. The following is a list of the most common signs that your toilet is leaking:

  • Your toilet runs until you jiggle the handle.

  • Your toilet makes strange sounds, even when it isn’t in use.

  • You have to hold the handle down until your tank empties completely.

  • There is water running over the over-flow.

  • After you flush there is water trickling down the sides of the bowl.

  • Water is dripping out of the refill tube and into the overflow pipe.

  • If your toilet is a “phantom flusher”, which is when your toilet will regularly turn the water on for around 15 seconds or so without you ever touching the handle.

If you experience any of these signs, it is probably time to contact your local plumber in Fairview Heights.  Sometimes a leaky toilet won’t exhibit any signs at all, which is why it is a good idea to use the dye test every once in a while. All you have to do is put several drops of food coloring in the tank and let it stand for a half an hour or so. If you notice any color in the bowl at all, you have a leak.
