We often don’t give our septic systems a second thought until a problem occurs.

Unfortunately, ignoring your septic system will only lead to issues. The good news is that, with proper maintenance, your septic system could have the long, efficient life that it was intended to have. However, in order to keep your septic system in good shape for as long as possible, you should avoid making mistakes that we see all too often in our line of work. The following is a list from our Edwardsville plumber of common septic system mistakes you should avoid:

#1. Flushing too much toilet paper and other products.

While it’s true that toilet paper is designed to be flushed, it doesn’t mean that your septic system can handle large quantities of it. Use only the toilet paper that you need, nothing more. It is also a good idea to note that baby wipes, disposable diapers, sanitary napkins and tampons should NEVER be flushed as they won’t break down and they will cause clogs.

#2. Not paying attention to what you put in your garbage disposal.

There are many things that people commonly put down their garbage disposals that can lead to clogs and blockages in the pipes. It is important to know what your garbage disposal can handle and what it can’t.  For a complete list of what not to put in your garbage disposal, check out our previous blog.
