What’s that noise coming from your plumbing system?

If you hear rattling, hissing or thudding late at night, an unhappy ghost may seem like the best explanation, but chances are, it’s actually your plumbing. It is common to hear noises coming from your plumbing system, but it’s important to know whether the noises you are hearing are normal or a sign of a serious plumbing issue. Luckily, our emergency plumber in Belleville is here to help! The following is a list of common plumbing noises and what they might indicate:

#1. Thudding and Shuddering

If you hear a thudding noise that is followed by shuddering after you turn your tap off, then you have a water hammer. Water hammers are caused when there is an abrupt shift in the water pressure in your piping system, like when you turn the water off. When the flow of water in your pipes suddenly stops, it creates a shock wave that causes the thudding sound in the pipes.

#2. Whistling or Banging

If you notice a whistling or banging noise when you turn the water off, it could be a sign that there is excess air in your pipes. Whistling could also be a sign that there is sediment in the pipes. Excess air or sediment in your pipes could eventually damage them, but a plumber can correct the problem.

These are just a couple of the many plumbing noises that you need to be aware of. Would you like to learn about more common plumbing noises? If so, please stay tuned for our next blog.
